Responsible Gambling: Know the Risks and Get Support

Learn how to recognize harmful gambling patterns, set boundaries and find independent U.S. gambling-support resources.

Independent affiliate publication, not William Hill, Caesars or an operator account portal. Eligibility and services vary by jurisdiction.

Gambling can cause financial and personal harm

Gambling is not a dependable way to earn income. Every wager carries the possibility of loss, and a short run of wins does not change that fundamental risk. People may experience stress, relationship conflict, borrowing or loss of control when gambling becomes harmful.

Set clear limits before gambling, never use money needed for living expenses, and avoid wagering to recover a loss. Taking a break or stopping entirely is a valid choice.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

  • Spending more time or money than planned.
  • Trying to win back losses, especially by increasing stakes.
  • Borrowing money, hiding activity or neglecting responsibilities.
  • Feeling anxious, ashamed or unable to stop.
  • Continuing despite financial or relationship consequences.

These are signals to pause and seek support, not a diagnosis.

Practical protective tools

Depending on the operator and jurisdiction, tools may include deposit limits, wagering limits, session reminders, cooling-off periods, time-outs and formal self-exclusion. Check how long each restriction lasts and whether it applies to one platform or a broader jurisdiction. Do not assume that deleting an app closes an account or activates exclusion.

Independent support in the United States

The National Council on Problem Gambling operates the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-MY-RESET. It connects people to information and support resources. Visit NCPG help and treatment resources, including chat and state-level referrals.

This helpline is not an emergency response service. If someone faces immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

This is a safety resource. No gambling conversion CTA is presented on this page.
